Adult-use is the term New York uses for non-medical cannabis. Adult-use purchases are limited to people aged 21 and older. Medical cannabis access depends on healthcare-provider certification and the requirements of the Medical Cannabis Program, with caregiver arrangements for patients who need them.

Quantity clarification: 24 grams of concentrate is not 24 grams of THC and is not a recommended amount to consume. Do not calculate edible legality or a personal dose by treating concentrate weight as equivalent to the THC milligrams printed on a package. The comparison above does not cover every possession exception or home-cultivation rule.

Medical patients: bring your certification and photo ID

OCM’s current patient guidance says to bring your signed patient certification, either on paper or displayed on a smartphone or another device, and government-issued identification. Its certification guidance specifies a government-issued photo ID.

The Medical Cannabis Program FAQ explains that patients are automatically registered when certified and that registry ID cards are no longer being issued. Your certification contains the registry ID used with your photo ID.

If you are a designated caregiver, do not assume the patient-only checklist is sufficient. Review the caregiver instructions and contact the medical dispensary if you are unsure what to bring.

Adult-use customers: age 21 and older with valid ID

Adult-use access is limited to people 21 and older. A medical certification is not required for an adult-use purchase, but valid age-verification identification is.

Check OCM’s accepted identification guidance before visiting. If your document is unusual or you are uncertain about its acceptance, contact the retailer in advance.

Important restrictions apply to both programs

  • Do not drive while impaired. Medical certification does not authorize impaired driving.
  • Do not take cannabis across state lines. OCM specifically states that this restriction includes medical cannabis.
  • Do not assume that a lawful purchase permits consumption anywhere. Location-specific restrictions still apply.
  • Do not assume a product is safe for you because it was purchased legally. Health risks and medication interactions still need consideration.

Safety: storage, delayed effects, and emergencies

Store cannabis locked away and out of reach of children and pets. Keep edible products clearly identified rather than allowing them to be mistaken for ordinary food.

Edible effects can be delayed and may not be fully felt until four or more hours after consumption, according to OCM. A lack of immediate effects does not establish that taking more is safe. This article does not provide individualized dosing instructions.

Discuss cannabis with a healthcare professional if you take prescription medication, have significant health conditions, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Medical-program participation does not remove these considerations.

  • Arrange locked storage away from children and pets.
